Missy Higgins' identity

I’ve spoken with Missy Higgins many times over the years. She’s an artist who we’ve all grown up with, first meeting her as a teenager Unearthed by triple j, watching as debut album went #1 and her songs became the soundtrack to our lives. As she got older so did we, and we used those songs to mark significant moments in our lives.

All the while, Missy was – of course – living her own story. And the life you may have pictured her living is very different to the one she was. I often think about perceptions; how we see someone versus how they see themselves. And I wondered how that felt for someone like Missy, who had been in the public eye and finding their sense of self, since they were 15 years old.

That’s why I gave Missy the theme of identity, and oh boy, did she embrace it. From Nina Simone to Colin Hay, this is an extraordinary conversation that will make you rethink what you thought you knew of Missy Higgins, and perhaps even re-evaluate your own life.

  • Nina Simone - Do I Move You

  • Sarah McLachlan - Black and White

  • Sia - Breathe Me

  • Philip Glass - Metamorphosis One

  • Colin Hay - Waiting For My Real Life To Begin
