By Joanna MenaghA Perth court has been told a 77-year-old man will maintain he is innocent of murdering a woman who vanished in Perth almost 40 years ago.
Key points:
- Sharon Fulton disappeared in Duncraig in 1986 and has never been found
- Last month a 77-year-old man was charged with her murder
- Today his lawyer told the court he intends to fight the charge
The man, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was charged last month with wilfully murdering Sharon Fulton, who was last seen alive in the Perth suburb of Duncraig in 1986.
Her body has never been found.
At the time Ms Fulton was a mother of four children who were aged between three and 15 when she disappeared.
In May this year WA Police offered a $1 million reward for any information about the case.
Then in October police announced they had charged the man.
Today he appeared in the Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court via video link from Casuarina Prison.
His lawyer, Jonathan Davies, told the court his client will be going to trial on the charge and given his "advancing years and infirmity" he was keen to move the matter along.
The case was adjourned until January next year and the man was again remanded in custody.
Outside the court, Mr Davies said he had been instructed by his client to publicly say that he maintains "he is innocent of the disappearance of (Ms Fulton)".
"He will fight the matter at trial until his name is cleared," Mr Davies said.
